On Screen Keyboard

To display the On Screen Keyboard:

  1. Right click on the Keyman Desktop icon in the system tray.

  2. From the Keyman menu select On Screen Keyboard. If it is not in the Keyboard view, click the View On Screen Keyboard button in the toolbar.

The On Screen Keyboard is displayed by default in the bottom right hand corner of the screen, but if it has been moved it will be displayed in the last position it was used in.

On Screen Keyboard Toolbar

A toolbar is located along the top of the On Screen Keyboard. It has the following buttons:

Switches to the keyboard view of the On Screen Keyboard.

View Character Map

Switches to the Character Map tool.

View Text Entry Helper

Switches to the Text Entry Helper tool.

Switch Keyman Off

Deactivates any active keyboards for the current application.

Select Keyboard

This icon will only appear if there is not enough room on the On Screen Keyboard Toolbar to display all the installed keyboards. When available, it displays a menu from which you can activate any installed keyboard.

Open Keyman Configuration

Opens Keyman Configuration.

Open Help

Opens Keyman Desktop Help.

Open Active Keyboard Help

Opens the selected active keyboard's introductory help.

Toolbar Options

Right clicking on the On Screen Keyboard will display a menu with the following options:

Fade When Inactive

When this option is enabled, the On Screen Keyboard will appear partially transparent when the mouse is not over it. Note: The Character Map and Text Entry Helper do not fade.

Show Toolbar

When this option is disabled, the toolbar at the top of the On Screen Keyboard will not appear.

Save as Web Page...

This option allows you to save the current On Screen Keyboard as a web page for future reference.

Print...

This option will print the current On Screen Keyboard (including diagrams for shift states).

Using the On Screen Keyboard

To enter text using the On Screen Keyboard:

  1. Position the text cursor where you want to type in your document.

  2. Click on any modifier keys on the On Screen Keyboard you need to obtain the desired character.

    For example: to obtain a percent symbol (%) using the standard US English layout, you need to press Shift+5. So start by clicking on the Shift key.

  3. Click on the key with the character you want to enter.

    For example: to obtain the percent symbol, you now need to click on the 5 key -- it should display a percent symbol (%) while Shift is selected.

Resizing the On Screen Keyboard

To resize the On Screen Keyboard, click and drag on a corner of the On Screen Keyboard window. Note that when the keyboard view is selected, the On Screen Keyboard will only resize according to the proportions of the keyboard.
